寺院始建于清乾隆年间。多次修缮后灵山寺寺庙前面正中是新修的琉璃瓦山门，以正殿天井为中心，两侧有众多的房舍堂廊，前后左右纵横相连，浑然一体，构成了一片古建筑群。
山中生态良好，气候宜人，山环水抱，风光优美。春来山花烂漫，锦秀满目；夏至万树披绿，郁郁青青；秋季枫树着红，层林尽染；冬日玉树琼花，景象万千。尤为五月，后山杜鹃烂漫，一簇簇，一片片，形成万亩花园，开遍山间湖畔。
据明代《隆庆潮阳县志》载:大颠墓塔建后三年，开塔重修，僧人见大颠尸骨容颜如生，头发指甲俱长，于是未搬动而重建；唐末又重修，开启墓塔后，见大颠尸骨已化,“唯舌根尚存如生”。修复后人称“瘗舌冢”；宋朝至道年间,县秀士郑士明又开塔修墓,见塔中舌根已溶化,仅存“古镜一圆”,所以后人称“舌镜塔”。
